• The first stage in getting yourself identified on the internet is to buy a domain name. This is the name by which you would like to be known. It can be your existing company name if you have one, or any name you like. It's advisable to choose one which people can remember easily, and can be read out over the phone without incurring misspellings.

  • If your existing company name is Jones and Co, for example and you are selling organic beetroot, it would be best to get yourself a domain name like www.organicbeetroot.com rather than www.jonesandco.com . This is because people will be searching for organic beetroot first, they won't necessarily know that Jones and Co even exists.

  • A domain name is always preceded by www (standing for world wide web) and finishes with a suffix normally indicating where the company is based e.g. .com - this tends to imply it is a global or large organisation, or .co.uk - this is a common one in the UK.  (This is not a strict rule, anyone can call themselves .com). The United Kingdom is .uk, and Russia is .ru for example - you wouldn't normally buy yourself a .ru unless you were also trading in Russia. You can also have .net, .org, .me, etc etc - to be honest it doesn't really matter very much - the search engines will still find your site.

  • Whilst the web page, described previously, and designed for your business is actually part of the Bath Farmers Market web site, www.bathfarmersmarket.co.uk  and this is the only name that the overall web site can have. However it is possible to buy your own 'stand alone' domain name which can then be 'pointed' to your personal page on the main website. This effectively gives your personal web page its own domain name, therefore turning it into a 'mini website'. Customers can access your webpage via the main website, or via your 'stand alone' unique domain name.

  • You can specify what name you would like, several options would help, and we can carry out a search to see if anyone else has already bought that particular name. If it is still available we can purchase it for you, and you will have exclusive use of that name for 2 years. You may renew it after 2 years for a similar fee plus any inflationary increase.

  • We then attach a 'redirect' to the domain name, rather like redirecting a phone call, to go to your personal web page on the Bath Farmers Market site. So anyone typing in your domain name, will see only your page on the web site, and not have to go right through the whole site from the beginning. There will be a 'button' on your page so that you can view the Bath Farmers Web site if you wish.

  • This is a very inexpensive way to have a 'mini web site'. You could for example put the domain name on your headed paper. The domain name can be attached to a full size web site at a later stage if required. You can move it wherever you wish.

  • The cost of this is £30.00 for a .co.uk, and £55.00 for a .com. (for 2 years) There are other suffixes which we can discuss with you.
