Zone D West Front.  Madonna No 37, and Child before conservation.  Here we can see the main causes for decay and loss of detail and clarity: heavy lichen growth, hard cement repairs and pointing, weak beds and associated friable surfaces of the Ham stone. The serious loss of detail since 1938 down the front surfaces of the sculpture was due to the lamination of the face bedded stone.
