About this service
A selection of family occasions will be included in the newspaper as usual, and
some on this website, on the news pages, free of charge. This is our normal monthly
service.
Recent Events
- If you would like your special occasion to be seen by your friends and
relations, over the internet, anywhere in the world, for a small charge we can include the details on this website. Send us the details of
any births, anniversaries, or bereavements in your family and we can include
them on a special page. There is no need to wait for the next month's issue of
the newspaper to be printed, this website is updated constantly.Click here
for a sample page.
We can include an account of
the family anniversary, written by yourselves, or by one of our journalists,
plus a picture or pictures.
This will enable other family
members to view the this material anywhere in the world. You can put your
anniversary or wedding photos on this site, and your friends and relatives could
view it in Australia, or anywhere else for that matter.
Forthcoming Events -
If you need to include details of a forthcoming event, private or business, to
help your guests find out more details of time and location, you can put this
information on a public or private page. Click here
for a sample page.
Do you want a public page or a private
page ? The page on which this
material is put can be a 'public'
page, like the newspaper, or if required it
can be a 'private' page, which means that the viewer would need a 'code' in
order to see the pictures and text. You would advise your friends or relatives
of the code, and they would use it to look at the pictures and text. Without the
code, no-one would be able to see the material. (Note: the level of security
offered here is not 100%, it would not deter a 'hacker' but is sufficient to
prevent the average 'surfer' from finding the page)
How do we send
our pictures to the (Local Newspaper) to be included on the website?

You can send the pictures and
text in the following ways:
By post - in the form of normal colour photos,
original printed invitations, handwritten text, typewritten
text, or word-processed text on a floppy disc. Most formats can be accepted e.g.
Word, or Word Perfect.
Post to:
Mendip Life,
Bell Square,
Blagdon,
Somerset,
BS40 7UB
By email - Pictures should be under 100k per picture, and we can use either the
main 'body text' of the email itself, or an attachment file composed in Word or
Word Perfect.
Emailed pictures and text should be sent to our web co-ordinator at the
address at the bottom of the page - ml@spiderspider.co.uk
not to the Mendip Life email address.
How
much
does it cost?
The cost varies between a
public page and a private page
Public page (see above) - the cost is £1.00 per picture, and £0.50 per line of
text (19 words approx)
Minimum charge (£30.00)
Private page (see above) - the cost is £1.50 per picture, and £0.50 per line
of text (19 words approx)
Minimum charge (£40.00)
The pictures and text stay on
the website for one month, if you wish to keep them there longer, the charge is
50% of the first month, per month thereafter. i.e. if the first month cost
£30.00, the cost for each subsequent month would be £15.00

Video Message
Send us a videotaped message
and we will transfer it onto a special page on the website for your friends and
relations to see anywhere in the world.
There are still
limitations to this technology due to the large amount of data required to make
up a video picture. It is quite quick and simple to send a still picture over
the internet, but video sequences still take a long time to 'download' unless
you have a special type of internet connection like ISDN or ADSL - Don't worry
what these terms mean - just think of it as a much 'thicker' telephone
connection.
With most 'home' computer
users,
it takes a few minutes to download a short video clip. If you have not looked at
a video clip on your computer before, you will probably not have the required
'replay' software. This is provided free of charge from the manufacturer, via
their website. In fact it downloads automatically, on request from yourself,
after you try to look at a video clip.
The two common types of free
software for viewing video clips are Quicktime movie, or Windows Mediaplayer. Most people find
downloading this rather a nuisance but once you have
downloaded it once, it will then replay any video clip from that point on.
Within the next few years all new computers will have the software included when
you buy them so it will become more common to include video sequences in
websites. Also the download time should speed up on 'home' computers.
A sample video message will be
shown here in due course. For more information and
prices, contact our web co-ordinator on the address at the bottom of the page.
